How the FDA Rounds Calories (and Everything Else)

You can't print your calculator's output on a label. FDA regulations prescribe exact rounding increments for every nutrient — a label showing "247 calories" is non-compliant even if it's arithmetically true.

Calories: 0, 5s, then 10s

Per 21 CFR 101.9(c)(1):

  • Less than 5 calories → may be expressed as 0
  • 50 calories or less → round to the nearest 5 (247 would be wrong; 45 or 50 is right at that range)
  • More than 50 → round to the nearest 10 (so 247 → 250)

Cholesterol <2mg → 0; 2–5mg → "less than 5mg" allowed; above → nearest 5mg
Sodium <5mg → 0; 5–140mg → nearest 5mg; >140mg → nearest 10mg
Total carbohydrate, fiber, sugars, added sugars, protein <0.5g → 0; <1g → "less than 1 gram" allowed; ≥1g → nearest 1g

%DV has its own rules

Percent Daily Values for macronutrients round to the nearest whole percent (101.9(d)(7)(ii)). Vitamins and minerals use stepped increments (101.9(c)(8)(iii)): up to 10% of the daily value → nearest 2%; from 10% to 50% → nearest 5%; above 50% → nearest 10%. Below 2%, the nutrient may be omitted with a "Not a significant source of…" note.

Notably, trans fat and total sugars have no %DV at all — a label showing one is wrong.

Why this matters for compliance

An inspector comparing your label to an analysis expects the label's numbers to be the rounded values, not the raw ones. And compliance tolerances (see our lab analysis guide) are measured against what you declared. Rounding by hand across 15 nutrients for every recipe revision is exactly the kind of work that produces label errors — it's the core thing this product automates.
